New to English football? This guide breaks down everything American fans need to understand about Wrexham AFC, the league system, and how to follow the club.

Wrexham AFC Explained for American Fans

So you've watched "Welcome to Wrexham" and you're hooked. But the English football system can be confusing for newcomers. Let's break it down.

    The Football Pyramid

Unlike American sports, English football uses promotion and relegation. There's no franchise system—clubs earn their place through on-field performance.
  1. Premier League - The top flight (think NFL)
  2. Championship - Second tier (where Wrexham plays now!)
  3. League One - Third tier
  4. League Two - Fourth tier
  5. National League - Fifth tier (where Wrexham was in 2020)
  6. How We Got Here

Wrexham was in the National League (fifth tier) when Reynolds and McElhenney bought the club in 2020. Three promotions later, we're in the Championship—just one tier below the Premier League!

    Key Terms

  7. Pitch = Field
  8. Kit = Jersey/uniform
  9. Nil = Zero
  10. Fixture = Scheduled game
  11. Table = Standings
  12. Promotion = Moving up a league
  13. Relegation = Moving down a league
  14. How to Watch

Championship matches are broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK and various streaming services in the US. Check our "How to Watch" guide for specific channels.

    Time Difference

Most matches kick off at 3 PM UK time (10 AM Eastern). Championship games also have 12:30 PM and 5:30 PM Saturday kickoffs, plus midweek games.
